The Royal Gorge Academy official recently arrested on charges of third-degree assault, false imprisonment and reckless endangerment appeared in court for the first time Tuesday.

Randall Hinton of Canon City, 32, was arrested Jan. 9 by Canon City Police Department after allegations were made by at least one student at the private school led to charges being filed.

Appearing in court wearing a navy blue pinstripe suit and represented by his attorney, Michael Gillick, Hinton said nothing during a brief advisement hearing Tuesday. No new charges have been filed against Hinton beyond the three recommended by investigating officers. The district attorney’s office will soon determine if additional charges are to be filed.

Hinton is project supervisor at the Academy, a school for predominately troubled teenagers. He has been placed on administrative leave by the school.

Deputy District Attorney Thom LeDoux requested that Hinton have no contact with current or former students at the Academy nor be allowed to visit the school’s campus while he remains free on bail. Hinton posted a $2,500 bond shortly following his arrest.

District Judge David Thorson agreed to LeDoux’s requested and ordered Hinton to stay away from the school and its students.

Hinton is scheduled to appear in court again at 8:15 a.m. Jan. 24.
